After four years in office, Dominic “The Dom” Coronet, the President of the United States of America, was again on the campaign trail driving a hard bargain. The Dom had ascended to power by leveraging his enormous influence as a business tycoon and appealing to Republican voters with his far-right views. For this election, he planned on doing nothing different except to up the ante on his firm immigration and economic policies. He had no doubts about winning the election, especially with the support of an anonymous government insider called R, who claimed to be exposing the Democrats by using conspiratorial posts on social media. When Larry Stevens, the Democrat Presidential candidate, emerges at the top of the polls during the voting exercise, it becomes clear he has won the tight race to the White House. The Dom is unwilling to concede defeat and calls for support from his followers to help him uphold office, alleging being defrauded of votes. With a huge following ranging from brainwashed John Does to devoted militia members, does America’s democracy and future stand a chance against The Dom? Find out in Eli Wellington’s R.
Grab a bag of popcorn and kick off your shoes because this page-turner will hook you from cover to cover. Eli Wellington’s R is just what lovers of political and conspiracy thrillers should be looking for. With a multi-perspective timeline, Wellington weaves an intriguing plot that draws on the political heat of the 2020 American presidential election. The depictions dropped me smack dab into the middle of all the action and drama, insightfully giving me a glimpse into America’s political mood at that time. The diverse cast allowed me to experience the struggles of each community living in the US, highlighting their biases, fears, privileges, and so much more. Albeit fiction, this story paints a clear image of American society, nuanced by the vices plaguing it and the agony of its people. It is interesting how the oppressors justify their inhumane deeds with ideals they would never agree with if they were on the other side of the “battlefield.”
