Klaus is a happy Schnauzer. He’s always on the go: whizzing around his backyard as if he’s on a rocket, chasing the squirrel, enjoying his kibble, playing ball at the park. It’s just go, go, go. And what a fun time he has, too. But there comes a time every day when the fun must come to an end, when Klaus must return home to his best friend and caregiver, to be pampered again, spoiled and snuggled, just enough for calling it a day and curling up to sleep. It’s a dog’s life. At least, it is for Klaus.
Terry E. Gunn’s picture book story, The Happy Schnauzer, is a sweet story about a very fun-loving, energetic Schnauzer dog. The plot follows Klaus, the Schnauzer, from the time he wakes up until he retires for the night. Told in rhyming verse, the author leads the young reader through an energy-charged, exciting day with Klaus as he does all the things he loves to do. The language is simple, suitable for a young reader. And the colorful, vibrant illustrations help carry this story along. The rhyming verse gives an exciting lilt to the storytelling and the reader will be instantly charmed with both words and illustrations and, of course, Klaus. This is a great 'learn to read' book for young readers and a great way for young people to share their love of dogs and learn how much work and fun go into having a best pawed friend.
