When the United Planetary Commission of Earth conquers an alliance of planets, a young rebel wreaks havoc in their plans in the science-fiction novel The Freedom: The Tarsal Saga by Michael Story. Randal Tarsal grew up on the planet that his ancestors helped colonize nearly two centuries before his birth. Leaving his childhood home to join the Interplanetary Guard Academy, Randal never expected to be commanding a battleship in the cosmos so soon. Taken prisoner after a fatal assault on his vessel, Randal and his fellow prisoners overtake their guards, steal a ship, and launch an attack on the UPC base. When he reaches the only planet in the Alliance unclaimed by the UPC, Randal officially receives the rank of a Commander and is given the ship he christened: Freedom. He is to learn as much as possible about the enemy so the Alliance can prepare a defense. Living in a peaceful era, the Alliance has never had any reason to prepare for war, but despite being ill-prepared and feeling inadequate, Randal determines to avenge his family, friends, and the Alliance.
With a war between earth and her former colonial planets, The Freedom: The Tarsal Saga by Michael Story is an exciting science-fiction novel that rivals the television series Battlestar Galactica. It is a fabulous story with a courageous protagonist, a believable story world, and a thrilling plot. The book is engaging and has excellent promise for the start of a series. However, it does come to an abrupt and sudden halt, so the reader may wonder what is happening. I was enthralled with the story despite the unexpected lack of closure. However, the story itself is superbly written and has the potential to become an outstanding series.
