The Early Years: A Memoir by Rachel G. Carrington reflects the early years of Rachel and Brad’s love story of a lifetime. However, the story does not start there. It begins with Rachel’s teenage years as she grew up in Kentucky with her siblings and parents. Rachel dreamed of becoming a teacher, so when the opportunity arose for her to get an all-inclusive scholarship to a good college, she grabbed that with both hands. But she soon started questioning whether living away from home and chasing a dream was worth it. However, things changed when she met Brad. A WWII veteran who missed his children after separating from his wife, Brad was everything Rachel hoped for in a life partner. The two clicked, and before they knew it, Rachel and Brad were sharing their joys and sorrows with each other.
The Early Years perfectly summarized the gist of their story and gave readers an idea of what to expect. Rachel shared everything beautifully and openly. I could tell that Rachel loved her family and Denton very much, but she had big dreams to follow. Brad wasn’t in her plans, but when God sent her that man, she snatched him up! I loved how confident she was and encouraged Brad to open up. While their story wasn’t picture perfect, it was perfect enough to be humanly possible (and how beautiful was that!). Brad was hurt pretty badly, and I could tell that immediately. He was shaken by the war and heartbroken for his children. But the two of them were a match made in heaven. Brad was besotted, and Rachel was devoted to him and their family. I don’t know how she found the courage to share her good and bad days with readers, but she did. The narrative style was simple yet exquisite. I loved the pace of the memoir and enjoyed every single moment of it.
