The Curse at Pirate Cove: Nikki Landry Swamp Legends is a children’s adventure by Rita Monette. Nikki Landry wants a new bike to replace her damaged one, but Papa can’t afford to buy a new bike for her eleventh birthday. After learning about the legendary pirate Lafitte, Nikki makes a special birthday wish. She and her friend, Spike, head off to search a haunted pirate ship for treasure. The two find the ship’s log and a metal box containing a map and key, but they ignore an ancient curse placed on anyone who takes the pirates’ loot. They return with friends, but are captured by Lafitte’s ghost, who sails into the past of 1814. Nikki worries if she and her friends will return to the future or will they walk the plank?
I like treasure hunting mysteries and The Curse at Pirate Cove is a delightful story. Nikki is a tomboy who likes exploring and adventures. She isn’t afraid to take risks and can be quite stubborn when she wants to do something. I like the charming description of the bayou. Rita Monette's writing expresses her fond memories growing up in Louisiana. The swamp can be dangerous to persons who aren’t familiar with the territory. Alligators, snakes, and other wildlife live there, but many people don’t mind living on boathouses in the bayou where fishing is a main source of income. Nikki’s family lives in the bayou. The Curse at Pirate Cove is a nice book from the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends.
