David-Michael Harding is a life-long writer whose work has appeared in national publications and has been recognized by the international writing community for his piece, The Cats of Savone. Harding’s previous historical fiction work includes, Forever Beneath the Celtic Sea, detailing the German submarine crew and their sinking of the ocean liner Lusitania. He is a collegiate writing instructor and former semi-professional football player. His experiences provide readers with well researched, crushing fast-paced action. Most of his days are spent writing from the cockpit of his sailboat, Pegasus, somewhere off the Nature Coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.

This is a collection of eight short stories and novellas by David-Michael Harding. The title story, The Cats of Savone, shows the nature of hardened criminals when they find a litter of kittens. The initial reaction of the men in any situation is violence, but how do they handle this feeling of love? My Boo Radley is a man disfigured from a car accident. All the neighborhood kids are afraid of him, but when an errant baseball enters his yard, one boy learns a little about him, and himself. Black Men in Bright Blue takes place in 1863 in South Carolina. At first, Rachel thought the men were in her dreams. Then she realized lives were in danger, more danger than a little girl could possibly handle. The Jazz Bridge is the story of the beginning of a tradition when musicians decide to join in the fifty-year celebration of a local bridge. It is a light and humorous look at what can happen when politics and music come together.
All of the stories are very well written and entertaining. They take you back to experience a moment in time that is so detailed and complete, you’ll forget it’s fiction. The characters are engaging and believable and I was surprised by how emotionally involved I became with them while watching how their decisions affected their lives. If you’re looking for short stories that will hold your attention while giving you a candid glimpse into human nature, you’ll enjoy The Cats of Savone by David-Michael Harding.
