In The Bear Barr Wants To Play The Guitar by Sigalit Haber, children are introduced to Bear Barr who learns to play guitar. His mother buys him a guitar. Bear Barr goes for music lessons and realizes that first he has to train his fingers to strum accurately. His fingers hurt initially and Bear Barr finds the pain bothersome. He wants to go back to his music lessons after a visit from his friend, Star, as she tells him that once the pain passes, the tune remains. This simple and adorable story is about persistence, the desire to make things happen, and the power of music.
The concept in the story is powerful and conveys the importance of pursuing what one likes and the demands of playing the guitar very nicely. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful and they make the concept and Bear Barr’s emotions clear to children. It is a good story for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries because of its concept, and the coloring page makes it good to use for interactive sessions. Bear Barr’s character is well sketched and readers can connect well with him not wanting to give up what he likes, and determination. The messages conveyed through the story are encouraging and will motivate young readers to pursue what they are passionate about, and to be persistent when it comes to making things happen. It is a good book to have in one’s personal collection because of the message and the concept.
