Ronnie Glaser’s The Adventures of Adam and The Incredibly Mysterious Zorkins is a fun fantasy/sci fi story aimed at children around middle grade age. Adam and his friend Howie get up to all sorts of mischief, including having a go at driving a car, getting themselves lost whilst playing a walking game, and unwisely climbing up on to a building that is under construction. Something seems to be keeping an eye on them and helping them out of their predicaments though. After a night in Adam’s newly built tree house, more mysterious things begin to happen and he discovers two tiny people called Zorkins. Adam confides in his sister Lizzie about his find. Zorkins like to be kept a secret, but also know they need a human protector. Can Adam and Lizzie pass the test they set them and become their new protectors?
The Adventures of Adam and The Incredibly Mysterious Zorkins is a chapter book of good length and vocabulary range for its target readership. The plot is nicely crafted. At first the story seems to be an everyday kind of tale about Adam’s family, his friendship with Howie, the excitement of having a tree house built, the school bully – but then some strange and intriguing things begin to happen. What child wouldn’t love to discover that tiny people with magical abilities exist! Even more exciting is that the children must keep this a secret. I love the idea of Simmee the turtle becoming a ‘taxi’ for the little people, and the magical words that can turn her into a fast moving creature. I felt there was a good message in the story when the Zorkins have sound advice for Adam and this helps him find the courage and ability to defeat Bobo the school bully.
A story about friendships, trust, loyalty and secrets that children will enjoy reading independently. As a shared story it would also be ideal for promoting conversations about overcoming bullying the best way, behaving wisely/staying safe, and the ingredients of good friendships. A worthy addition for any child's book shelf.
