Jen was going to spend a whole summer away from home at the beach with her grandmother. Jen was happy to see her grandma after she landed and once they reached home, Jen felt cozy and safe. That night, Grandma gave her a gift; it was a pear-shaped pendant made of blue sea glass, its edges worn and frosted by time and it hung from a thin, braided leather necklace. Grandma placed it around her neck and told it would protect her and keep her safe from harm. The next day they both decided to take a walk on the beach. For Jen, it was a welcome change from the busy streets back home and she enjoyed walking on the beach with the sand squishing between her toes. She saw a glimmer and it was the top of a bottle poking out from the sand. It was sparkling and something happened when Jen touched it...

Story Glass by Billy Baldwin is a fantastical adventure that takes young readers on an exciting trip back in time where they come across an evil wizard, sand fairies, monstrous sea creatures, a whirlpool, and others. Liesl Bell's wonderful and colorful illustrations breathe life into this adventure story and make the characters and the scenes vivid and palpable. The illustrations also add to the magic, whimsy, and enchantment of the story and will keep readers glued until the end. The story has action, adventure, suspense, danger, mystery, and friendship and it also conveys good messages and life lessons. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and children will enjoy it too. The narration is detailed and evocative and I like the manner in which the author has woven life lessons and messages into the plot. This also makes it a good book to use for storytelling sessions in classrooms and at home so that youngsters can have a fascinating adventure and learn some good life lessons in an entertaining way.

My daughter, who is 10, couldn't put this book down. I think the combination of an exciting story with beautiful illustrations was just what she needed to get her deep into a good book. I'm recommending this to all my friends with kids around this age. I actually sat down with a cup of coffee and went through the entire book and it entertained me! I imagine it would have been enjoyable to read this out loud to younger children as well.
