Melinda Pratt was just a small child and the only survivor when her Indian village was attacked. She was rescued by a kind man by the name of Joseph Pratt and taken home to his wife Rebecca to be raised as their daughter. Melinda fit into the family and though the Pratt's had more children they always loved Melinda as their own, but unfortunately other people didn't see her that way, making Melinda feel as if she were caught between two worlds. She did have one friend who stood up for her when the other children picked on her, and that someone was Will Bentley who lived on the neighboring farm. As they grew older, Melinda's feelings for Will deepened, but she wonders how they can ever be together because he plans to go to Boston to become a doctor. There is also a band of marauding Indians in the area, and when Melinda is captured she wonders if she will ever find her way back home to the ones she loves. What does the future hold for Will and Melinda, and will she ever make it back home?
I love historical fiction and this book really fit the bill. I actually read it in one sitting because I just had to find out what happened with Melinda. The author easily pulled me into the life of Melinda. I could understand how she must have felt: she was loved and cared for by the Pratt's but some of the townspeople couldn't accept her, judging her by what she was instead of who she was. Will was just an all-around nice guy, and the relationship between him and Melinda was sweet. While I knew where the plot was going the author provided a few twists to keep it interesting. There was a bit of suspense as I wondered how things would work out for Melinda and the Indian child that was in her care. I also thought the author provided an interesting twist on what happened to the Indian village.
In general, if you are looking for a quick read that weaves together historical fiction, that has a bit of an inspirational feel, as well as a sweet/chaste romance and a bit of suspense, you are going to enjoy reading this one.
