Somewhere Between the Land and the Sea: A Worried Mum by Ian Humpheryes explores the wonders and mysteries of the rockpool. One of the inhabitants of the rockpool is Clear Shrimp. She is off to play a game of hide and seek with her friends, Red Starfish and Green Crab when she comes across something unusual. They are cuttlefish fish eggs, and she meets the mother cuttlefish guarding them. With the tide out, the creatures of the rockpool are vulnerable, especially when a hungry seagull comes along. Many rockpool residents have ways to hide or protect themselves, but what will happen to the cuttlefish eggs? Predators aren't the only thing endangering the rockpool inhabitants. Leftover trash from people can also be a problem. Will Clear Shrimp and her friends be safe?
Ian Humpheryes introduces the unusual creatures of the rockpool with an engaging story. Kids will be intrigued by Clear Shrimp and the cuttlefish and how they survive in their watery world. In addition to the narrative, each creature and pivotal moment gets a poem, highlighted in a separate bubble. The illustrations are almost lifelike, especially the cuttlefish, but they also are soft and ethereal. Kids will feel like they are looking into the rockpool with its ebb and flow. Ian weaves facts and lessons about caring for the earth seamlessly into Clear Shrimp's story. As children learn more about the fascinating creatures that inhabit the waters, they will naturally want to know how to keep them safe. Somewhere Between the Land and the Sea: A Worried Mum is a beautiful, watery tale that will delight young ocean lovers.
