Shifting Paths by Sandra L. Koehler: 'Change is an opportunity to face your fears and grow beyond your limited vision'. Set in the desert, the story ties the four characters together beautifully. Jonah, Marcie, Markus, and Nate are hikers in the wilderness who face more difficulties than the challenges they faced in their daily lives. Now they have to work together for their survival. Dillon is also struggling for his survival in the desert and, while he is not sure of his future, his sister Suzette takes a hiking trip into the Superstition Wilderness with friends Doug and Timber and four high school students. The story brings together all of them facing the real challenges of their lives in the wilderness.
The characterization is excellent. Challenges in life provide an opportunity to learn, grow, and change. The four characters of Nate, Marcie, Jonah, and Markus have their own battles to face at home and they never realize what is in store for them is worse than what they face daily until they take this hiking trip. Each chapter begins with a thoughtful and profound line which speaks about the spiritual undertones in the book. There is always something spiritual with the expansiveness of the desert and the author has managed to capture that beautifully. The secret Indian tribe that the author has brought in during the course of the story shifts the angle to a bit of whimsy. For those who are looking to bring a spiritual change in their routine, this book is a must-read.
