Sheldon Gets a Collar by Maureen Baggett shares the ordeal of a large black cat called Sheldon, which lives with his human, Justin. Sheldon has trained his human well, resulting in Sheldon getting food, water, cuddles, and a nice place to live. Justin soon tells Sheldon that they are moving in with his mother, before breaking the news to Sheldon that Justin’s mother also has a cat. After they move, Sheldon refuses to accept Justin’s mother’s cat, but Sheldon soon realises that the other cat is actually very small. Sheldon starts bullying the tiny cat, leading to Justin’s mother buying a collar with a bell so that her cat can hear Sheldon approaching, giving it a chance to run and hide before Sheldon attacks. Unhappy with the new collar, Sheldon demands that Justin remove it but Sheldon’s human does not understand the request. Justin’s friend, Erin, then visits. Sheldon complains to Erin about the collar. Will she understand what he's saying?
I found this to be such a beautifully illustrated book which teaches so many valuable lessons to children. First, the reader learns that animals have thoughts and feelings and that bullying is not okay (in this case, Sheldon bullying a smaller cat). Erin’s kindness to Sheldon led her to be accepted immediately, teaching that animals react well to kindness and deserve our respect. Maureen Baggett’s Sheldon Gets a Collar conveyed so many important messages in such a small book, with the illustrations helping bring this wonderful story to life.
