Shasha and Wally Watson Vs The Faker by Ted Kelsey is a wonderful adventure mystery story for readers of nine years and up. Wally, who appears to have some of the traits of autism (although the story doesn’t say), and his older sister Shasha are suspicious when a fake detective calls about a missing local girl called Alice and a white cat. They set out to solve the mystery and are soon hot on the trail of the Faker and the so called Ghost Burglar. Shasha’s developing detective skills and Wally’s amazing ability to notice and remember details lead them into some strange and weird discoveries and situations. But then things take a different turn – will Wally be able to escape from the clutches of the Faker?
Ted Kelsey knows exactly how to create a fun and exciting story for children. Shasha and Wally Watson Vs The Faker is a very well-written story with the language level aimed just right at target readers. The plot is well thought out with plenty of twists, turns, excitement and suspense and, what every good children’s book needs, a satisfying ending. The characters are excellent – all the individuals are very believable. Young readers will love Wally with his quirky, extraordinary and very useful special abilities, and big sister Shasha’s determination to solve the mystery.
Although it is not mentioned by the author, I recognized autism traits in Wally’s way of thinking and seeing life. The children’s grandfather is also quite a character and the relationship between them all is delightful and very funny. There is a lovely message here about including and accepting one another with all our differences. The character of the Faker is just the right amount of scary, puzzling and mysterious without being overdone and this way of presenting baddies is something important to get right in children’s books. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shasha and Wally Watson Vs The Faker and recommend it for young readers.
