Shadow of the Moon is a historical fiction drama by Edward McSweegan. It's the year 1878. After returning from Colorado Springs, having lost a friend to an ambush, Nolan Carter is back in Pueblo, Colorado, when he comes across Professor Mitchell of the Vassar Astronomy Group and her companions. Professor Mitchell and her astronomers need Nolan's services to haul their telescopes and equipment to Denver on his freight wagon to witness and record the Great Solar Eclipse. However, circumstances force Nolan and Cora, a student, to part ways from the wagon. Now, Nolan and Cora must navigate a treacherous journey to Denver, battling lecherous Mexican vaqueros, fierce Ute warriors, and rattlesnakes along the way. While Nolan is at risk of losing all his nine lives, Cora lights a fire in him that brings him purpose and meaning.

Author Edward McSweegan traverses the genres of Western, historical fiction, and survival romance to deliver a captivating tale that holds your attention from start to finish. Shadow of the Moon is a Western romance drama that sheds light on the lives of some truly revolutionary women who changed the trajectory of astronomical research in the late 1900s in America. The story is set in a time of era-defining cultural change in American history when the wild West frontier way of life slowly ebbed away and gave way to the more progressive values of American society. Many of the characters in this book are actual historical personalities, and McSweegan brings their essence to life in these pages. I really liked the burgeoning romance between Nolan and Cora. Overall, this is a fantastic book for historical fiction and Western enthusiasts.
