Seven Miles Deep: Chantrea by Valorie Lord is a stunning adventure that brings two worlds together as two boys make amazing discoveries. Jake finally gets to travel with his father to the island where he lives and expects it to be a grand adventure, just the two of them, but his father still doesn’t have time for him as he has his hands full with research and a mysterious submarine. He meets a strange child from a village that was thought to be abandoned. When Nico’s grandmother falls ill, Jake’s father takes her off the island to the hospital and while he’s away, Jake decides to take the submarine down into the water. Jake never expected to discover a whole other world hidden under the surface. Cori lives in an amazing underwater city called Chantrea and learns that he has Acsencia, which means that he has an amazing new opportunity to visit the strange alien world above. Taking his first trip to the surface, he encounters a mysterious boy.
Valorie Lord splits the story between two lovely locations with the first being the island where Jake’s dad lives and works while the second is Chantrea. Jake hopes that this visit will bring him closer to his father who has been distant in his life but he’s immediately disappointed when his father is still consumed by his work. Jake’s curiosity is the catalyst for what sparks his interest in the submarine and what makes him take his own trip down into the water. The story is split between two perspectives weaving between discoveries on the island and discoveries under the water in Chantrea. The story unfolds as the two boys are embarking on their own coming-of-age journeys, which will eventually lead them to discover a whole other world that turns out to be each other. Seven Miles Deep delivers a delightful adventure that explores two coming-of-age journeys that children will adore and that will sweep them away into an amazing underwater city.
