A little person has been accused of murder…
I just finished reading Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell. Cornwell has long been one of my favorite authors. I have read every book she’s written. My favorite is her Kate Scarpetta series. For those of you not familiar with the series, Kate Scarpetta is a forensic pathologist. Readers have followed her career from its early days in Richmond, Virginia, to Florida, to New York. The Kate Scarpetta series’ genre is mystery. However, Cornwell created Scarpetta to be more than a pathologist. She is a female Dr. Quincy only better. She works closely with FBI agent Wesley Benton. Then there is Pete Marino a police detective. We can’t forget her niece Lucy who becomes a computer genius. We have watched these characters as they matured. Their relationships have been rocky. In Scarpetta, Marino and Kate are reunited to solve the murder of a “little people.” Oscar “a little person” is accused of the ghastly crime and will talk to no one but Scarpetta.
You can probably tell I am a Kate Scarpetta fan…ah that is Patricia Cornwell fan. Scarpetta is a good read not a great read. It does not live up to Cornwell’s high standard. It felt as if Cornwell was wrapping up loose ends. I figured out the killer long before the end of the book. The ending seemed rushed and a bit contrived. I realize I sound like I did not like this book. I liked it. I just think Cornwell’s earlier books are better. If you have not read this series begin with the first book and watch each character develop and grow. Each book stands well alone but the pleasure is in watching them mature.
