Santa and the Cotton Tree by Diane Campbell Green with illustrations by Linda Elizabeth Jones is a children’s adventure book. Set in 1963 in a small Pennsylvania town, this heartwarming story is a tale of family and an old-fashioned Christmas celebrated in simpler times. It is Christmas Eve and dedicated parents Jim and Jackie are hard at work ensuring that their four children will have a special Christmas. Jim is secretly building a homemade cotton tree, while Jackie prepares the turkey for the holiday dinner. While mom and dad are busy, Becky, the oldest of the four siblings, decides to take the younger children to visit Santa. The children end up having an adventure when snow and colder temperatures set in. This memorable Christmas story demonstrates the love between families and that the simple things in life are often the best and the most meaningful.

Diane Campbell Green’s Santa and the Cotton Tree is a beautiful and heartwarming story. Lovely illustrations evoke the time period in which it was written. The care and concern that the children have for one another is evident and moving. The siblings wanted to create a special memory for their youngest sister, and I found that to be very touching. The joy that Jim and Jackie display as they watch their children’s delight on Christmas morning is beautiful. It was so interesting for me to learn about the history and what goes into making an actual cotton tree. Santa and the Cotton Tree comes highly recommended for a warm, cozy, and memorable holiday read.
