Relative Consequences by Jody Herpin is a sweeping novel about haunting secrets, redemption, racism, and forgiveness. It follows Jessy Tate as she struggles to cope with her husband's death, guilt, anxiety attacks, and nightmares. After a call with her psychiatrist, Jessy learns that her nightmares may have to do with a traumatic event she may have experienced when she was a kid, but she can't remember it as her mind has blocked it out. Thus, Jessy turns to her childhood friend, Rita May McAfee, to ask her if she recalls any frightening event that took place in Bonita Springs when they were children. But Rita refuses to reveal anything as she believes that dwelling on the past brings nothing but pain. Will Jessy be able to remember what haunts her? And at what cost?
Relative Consequences by Jody Herpin is a riveting journey through history, loss, hate crimes, ambition, racism, and buried secrets. It explores the consequences of keeping a secret and the consequences of uncovering it. With haunting detail and poignancy, Jody Herpin captures the innocence of childhood and the harsh reality of the world in which her protagonist grows up. This powerful story is all about the depth of the characters and the belief systems and opinions handed down from generation to generation. The author does an amazing job of showing how dreadful secrets leave different marks on each of her characters. Relative Consequences is an immersive plunge into a particularly tumultuous time in which people didn't want to see change. Thus, I'm sure that this fascinating page-turner will not only appeal to mystery fans but also to history buffs.
