Rags and Ruins is an enchanting tale of a human boy raised by two kind and loving goblins. Marked as the Child of Darkness, Rags was allowed to live out his early life among magical creatures in a state of ignorant bliss, although he was always under the watchful eye of a council of wizards. But as his 13th birthday approaches, he and his twin brother must meet to fulfill a prophecy that could set free an ancient evil.
Bob Dixon has woven a simple yet captivating tale, one that manages to take readers on a fun adventure while delving into the nature of good and evil and the role of free will versus fate. Casual readers will no doubt enjoy the amazing characters and the author's smooth, flowing writing style, while more discerning ones will revel in the underlying clash of philosophies and the moral ambiguities and paradoxes that the story encapsulates. Like the best 3D animation movies today, Rags and Ruins has something for children to enjoy and for adults to ponder.
Bob Dixon knows how to take his readers for a fun ride and I, for one, felt a pang of sadness when the novel ended. I hope that Rags and Ruins will simply be the start of a series of books featuring this very interesting cast of characters set in a world not quite so different to our own. As a reader, I would not hesitate to join Rags and his friends on another magical adventure.
