Price of Life by David Crane starts in France in 10,000 B.C. A young tribesman named Ru was the only survivor of his people when they were attacked by another tribe. With the help of a sacred crystal, a strange remnant from a meteorite, Ru became immortal, killed his enemies and avenged his people. Twelve thousand years later, his descendants, inheriting his gift of immortality, are living in secret among unsuspecting humans. There are several protagonists; businesswoman Dina Amulai, singer Laura Green, Cardinal Diego Martinez and entrepreneur Mr. Richard Rune, just to name a few. The immortals sustained their youth and eternal life by taking other people’s life force. To justify their action, immortals like Laura and Dina heal people who deserve their help and replenish their energy by taking the lives of sinister individuals.
I see some Highlander influence in the concept and premise. The plot has substantial depth, and some historical facts are given interesting twists to fit the story. Through different POVs, the story takes place in different places such as Spain, the US, Switzerland, Germany and Argentina. This aspect could be somewhat overwhelming for some readers, but the narrative is straightforward. There are also different time settings which serve as the back story for the characters and their origin. I gravitated more towards Dina’s story. Her ability to foresee the future is unique, even among the immortals. Overall, Price of Life is an interesting work from David Crane. Perhaps, if there’s a sequel, fewer POVs could give more room for story and character development for one or two of the protagonists.
