Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King is an inspirational and vibrant collection of poems. It encompasses so many topics and motifs that it is difficult to quote them all: they range from love, bliss, animosity desire, sadness, human emotions generally speaking, to equality between races and the plight of black Americans in the United States, but also to the changes which are occurring nowadays in their lives in the States. The author recalls her influences and her predecessors such as Maya Angelou and Martin Luther King, who also shared their hopes and dreams and have changed the world one word and one action after another.

Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King is a collection of poems which is dedicated to the nourishment of our souls in an era filled with difficulties and world-wide issues such as crime and climate change. Let me say that this aim is completely achieved and that these poems are as potent as they are right and feel right. It is not just a collection of beautiful poems; it has a mission and that is what I loved above all in these poems! Entertaining is fine but it is never enough to my mind. I love to read and be uplifted, to be made to think and rethink the world we all live in, to be made to see things from a slightly different angle. That is why I wholeheartedly recommend this amazing collection of poems and why I will recommend them to my own students (I teach American literature).

Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King is a beautifully composed book of poems which cover subjects not normally seen in the genre of poetry. The subject matter is courageous and extraordinary. The perfectly crafted poems covered include politics, abuse, hatred between races, to name just a few. You are taken on an emotional, thought-provoking journey of self-discovery into the truly destructive behaviour of mankind towards each other and the problems caused by their cruelty and ignorance. However, this is not a depressing read but an inspiring one. It will offer an understanding and self-awareness into the sometimes inexplicable behaviour of man which will soothe your soul with optimism. Throughout the pages, you will find peace and solace and be inspired to love yourself and others.

Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I experienced every emotion as I read this book. From inspiration to sadness to wonder. A very captivating and, in places, dark and sad subject matter. I had many favourite poems that resounded with me, especially Worthy and Beautifully Flawed, which describes how a damaged soul can free themselves from a negative self-image and begin to accept themselves for who they are. Another empowering poem describes the harsh mistreatment of a slave girl by her master but her resilience to survive in Ode To The Color Purple, which is one of my favourite movies. Lastly, Mayas Spirit is an outstanding poem and a fine tribute to one of the greatest heroines in history, and which captured her life and spirit perfectly.

Poetically Unapologetic begins with a short introduction by Sophia about herself, her inspiration, and her own background, and also lays the groundwork and foundation of what to expect in this collection. The poems themselves don’t have any explanation or anything preceding each of them, but the language of the words reveals the theme pretty clearly. A lot of the work in this collection focuses on the age-old issues of inequality and injustice in the world, as well as the specific issues relevant to today’s world, and specifically and especially in America, love and loss, grief and trauma, what gives meaning to life and stories of hope, inspiration, and motivation, religious and spiritual themes, and more.

I liked the collection of poems in Poetically Unapologetic. Sophia comes across in all of her poems as inherently genuine, sincere, and thoughtful, as well as someone who has experience of life and pain. I loved that she has included snippets of Maya Angelou in the work itself, which meshes in wonderfully with the theme of some of the poetry. Hopefully, a book like this will go a long way towards educating people and increasing awareness that we are all essentially human with the same emotions, and that no one is inherently superior or inferior. This is a book that is not only enjoyable, but also packs a simple and powerful social message.

Dealing with the unbridled turbulence of today’s political storm, Poetically Unapologetic delves deep into the dark niches of those subjects considered to be most sensitive. Every person on this planet has a story. Should they choose to tell it, don’t interject, agree or argue – just listen. With most pages written in ‘narrative’ verses, each depicts tales of murder, suicide, death, domestic abuse, terrorism, love, lust and more, as they dissect people’s lives, piece by piece, to examine how they’d been broken, and if they could ever possibly be whole again.

The incredible stories contained in the pages of Poetically Unapologetic are so gentle and in depth, yet so harsh at the same time. As I immersed myself within the writings, vivid visuals would appear in my mind, not just telling me of the feelings behind each poem but also showing me how each plays out. ‘The Stranger in My Heart’ captured me with its every word, as I remember all too well that feeling of helplessness and hopefulness, praying that the endless domestic violence and hatred would end, and wondering if the beatings and abuse were my fault – if I had, in fact, created the monster I once loved.

Although chaos is often felt, Sophia King’s poems also leave a gap here and there in order to project tales of love and tenderness – a glimpse of which is so often overlooked in today’s world as feelings of despair and defeat bully their way into our lives so graphically through the media. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Poetically Unapologetic and do not hesitate to recommend it to readers aged 15 and over, so they can also grasp the truth of today’s life inside a political climate which is lived by us all globally.

Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King is a gorgeous collection of poems that are intimate, unveiling the hidden climates of the author’s life and exploring powerful themes that are intrinsically connected to our humanity. The voice is refreshing and compelling, and readers can feel the spiritual current that runs through each poem. The first poem already lets readers in on what they will be finding in this collection: “My poetry is like a box of chocolates; / you never know which flavor you’re / going to get!” The title of the book is justified by the fact that the author looks at her life and embraces the seasons of her journey towards growth and enlightenment in a way that is limpid and enticing, and readers will find themselves in most of the lines in these pages.

“Beautifully Flawed” is one of my best poems in the collection, elegantly crafted and pointing to the fact that we are precious, in spite of our brokenness, and that life still flows through the pores of our broken selves. The poems compel readers to look at crude human reality with honesty and courage. The language is rhythmic and it has a spell of its own, featuring powerful symbolic images that will speak to the hearts of readers. Poetically Unapologetic is a collection of poems from the heart and some of these poems are personal stories, insights, and observations that capture the essence of life in a way that is unique and interesting. There is gem for everyone in this collection and something that will remind every reader of the light that shines within them in the stark moments of life.

I found Poetically Unapologetic by Sophia King to be a beautifully written and very inspiring collection of poems. One immediately gets the impression of peering into the very depths of another’s soul and what I found most intriguing is how the author translates universal human experiences and feelings — pain and despair, love and connections, family and friendship, God and communion, and the pursuit of meaning — into very beautiful lines. The poems are well-written, each unique, delivered in a voice that melts the heart of the reader. They are written in a free, evocative style and some of them are focused narratives.

I was pulled in by the honest voice of the poet and the beauty of the lines that are full of rhythm. I enjoyed those poems that were more personal, where the author shares her thoughts, her dreams, and her connection with the world. I found it hard to read Sophia King’s Poetically Unapologetic without feeling as though she were talking directly to me, because her writing transforms the mundane and renders it sublime and noble. Her style is very accessible, but the syntax, though familiar, carries a lot of beauty and elegance in it. You’ll have a strong feeling that you are entering into someone’s life and that she allows you to touch her heart, but there is something arresting about this collection and it is hard to point out exactly what it is — perhaps it is the author’s sense of humanity that rubs off on the reader.

The collection also reveals the poet’s belief in the Holy Spirit and encourages readers to use the gifts they have inside them rightfully.

The poet’s feelings, emotions, and strength are evident from her words and they also show how her soul has withstood the problems and conflicts she has faced and emerged a winner. All the poems touch readers in many ways. The poem ‘Gone Too Soon’ captures loss, grief, angst, and sorrow and it is a heartrending poem. The same thing can be said about ‘Shattered,’ though the pain you get from there is of a different type. Her poems have a simplicity and familiarity that make them appealing to all poetry lovers. The issues she highlights through her writings are relatable and they speak about the masquerade called life, which is again another poem in the book. The collection covers diverse topics, making it an engaging read. The last poem - ‘Poetically Unapologetic’ - is a perfect poem to close this collection: ‘I want you to use your words intelligently to help bridge the gap intellectually connecting the subconscious and conscious to awaken the soul.’

Excellent Read! Sophia bares her soul in this book. Her book really resonates with readers. Her raw emotion pulls at the heartstrings but her resilience is what makes her so relatable.
