Ophelia by Charlene Raddon, the sixteenth book in The Widows of Wildcat Ridge, follows the life of Ophelia, the wife to Mortimer Crane, a wealthy but brutish mine owner. After enduring his continuous deceit for years, Ophelia decides it is time to call it quits and divorce Mortimer. She heads to Wildcat Ridge, seeking freedom and independence. In her new town, the townsfolk regard her with suspicion, what with her being the wife of the cruel supposed owner of the town. Ophelia realizes she will have to earn their trust as she takes control of what is rightfully hers. She also crosses paths with Brody Duvall, once the only man she wanted to be with. Meanwhile, word gets to Mortimer of Ophelia’s intention to leave him. He heads back to Wildcat Ridge, thirsty for revenge.
Ophelia by Charlene Raddon is built around the main character of Ophelia. The plot does not lose direction as the story continues to unfold, revealing details about Ophelia’s life and new experiences in the town. Her thoughts are included in the work, which helps in developing the character and also provides a way to bring out other characters’ traits through Ophelia’s keen observations and strong opinions. The story does not disappoint as it is filled with many suspenseful moments, some being violent but not too ghastly. Humor is a frequent feature in the work and it is used to accentuate dialogue and break tense points in the plot. Ophelia by Charlene Raddon is a captivating read, sure to delight lovers of romance.
