Imagine traveling anywhere in the world at any time in history. Katerina and her friends have a magical globe that transports them through space and time. They have the most marvelous adventures together, all while learning something about another time, another place, another culture. This time they’re going to celebrate Katerina’s birthday – in ancient Egypt. Not only will they go back in time, but they will arrive dressed as part of Egyptian royalty. A trip down the Nile will take them past fertile fields and the famous pyramids. At each stop along the way, the children will share their knowledge of ancient Egypt: like papyrus and its many uses, the great pyramids and the noble afterlife the pharaohs believed in, the hieroglyphs and so much more.
Demetra Tsavaris-Lecourezos’s picture book story, One Unde-NILE-ably Fun Party! Young World Travelers, is an adventure any young reader will enjoy, while at the same time learning some interesting and important details about history. This is an educational book, but it’s also a story about a group of friends who work together and enjoy each other’s company. Together, this group of friends shares their knowledge, their expertise (they all excel at one thing or another) and their sense of adventure. There is also a magical element to these stories – the magical globe that instantly transports the friends through time and space. The plot develops gradually with interesting informative tidbits thrown in as the adventure escalates. The beautiful illustrations certainly provide a vivid depiction of life in Egypt during the era of the pharaohs. A beautiful way to entertain and teach at the same time.
