The fourth book in the Northern Wolf Series, Northern Dawn by Daniel Greene brings you a promoted Lieutenant Johannes Wolf, a man who has been changed by the ongoing war. Rising from the ranks, he has managed to escape Libby Prison, vowing never to return or speak about it, as if it were a curse. The war is still far from being won, and he is not only fighting for himself but for his regiment and country as well. Brigadier General Custer is going to request assistance or his brigade will be destroyed down to the last man. Custer’s luck will be tested, as it is only a matter of balancing between survival and disaster. As for Wolf, his new appointment will be tested in the largest cavalry battle.
As inherently astonishing and powerful as the story of Custer’s Luck is, it has never been so well-depicted in historical fiction as in Northern Dawn. Daniel Greene’s well-conceived narrative ends up giving readers a ringside look at the American Civil War. With vivid details, the novel serves as a searing reminder of the horrors of the only war fought on American soil, and the noble sacrifice of the brave men who fought for freedom. There is plenty of dramatic interest in this novel that measures the intensity of Greene’s storyline. From start to finish, it proves to be a focused depiction of history, and it reaches a thematic point. This is a military history series that is worth reading. Greene is very much on solid ground in this fine story that is powerful and dignified.
