The Sapien Empire by Nathan Ogloff is a gritty, post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that charges forward with fierce momentum and philosophical weight. In a world ruled by brutality and despair, Shindo Dacan is no hero, he’s just a man trying to survive. But when a senseless murder turns his passive endurance into burning defiance, Shindo sets out on a dangerous journey to challenge everything he’s ever known. Can he truly lead, or will he become the very tyrant he’s trying to overthrow? With thought-provoking themes and a protagonist you’ll root for even as you question him, this is dystopian fiction done right: fierce, reflective, and impossible to put down.

Author Nathan Ogloff has set himself a tall order in creating a whole new post-apocalyptic vista, and he does it with great success in a detailed world that feels raw, dangerous, and all too believable the deeper we venture into it. I loved sitting on Shindo’s shoulder to see this world develop and evolve around him. One of the things that cements its realism most is how the people Shindo interacts with are affected by their surroundings in terms of their culture, actions, and attitudes. The logic of the place is ingrained in the dialogue and descriptions of the action, and a fascinating moral ambiguity seeps in through Shindo’s rise and keeps the tension on a knife-edge, even when things seem to be going right. Overall, The Sapien Empire is a highly engrossing dystopian novel with plenty of thrills and realism, and it’s a book that I highly recommend.
