Kojo Gyan's Teneō is a fascinating story about sentient entities that can attach themselves to humans (their hosts) whenever they consume their host's consciousness. This paranormal process can easily be initiated while their hosts are daydreaming or lost in thought. The narrative focuses on one entity, in particular, that occupies different hosts whenever it senses that a new host is 'leaking' its consciousness. The entity eventually occupies the body of a woman named Jeanne and is enthralled by her lifestyle. Initially, their relationship is symbiotic. But, under the influence of other entities, Jeanne's entity begins to desire more freedom and autonomy over Jeanne's life. In the interim, poor Jeanne is blissfully unaware that the entity has attached itself to her soul. In this shocking fight for dominance, only one of them can be in total control. Who will it be?

Teneō by Kojo Gyan offers an engaging view on consciousness and the loss of bodily autonomy by exploring the profound dichotomy between the entity and Jeanne. The entity represents how easily humans can lose touch with their individuality and reality amidst the perpetual internal stimuli vying for their attention. I was captivated by the entity's reasoning capabilities as time went by, ultimately resulting in it becoming more self-aware and demanding. Nonetheless, discovering the world through its eyes was a unique, immersive, and somewhat unnerving experience. Overall, the characters are well-developed and intriguing. Even though Hobbes' blood-curdling role in the narrative will pull readers out of their comfort zones, the story is designed to draw readers deeper into its engrossing world with each page turned. This novella will definitely appeal to fans of paranormal, horror, and speculative fiction.
