Night of the Fae (Ana Martin Series (Vol 1) by Lyneal Jenkins introduces us to twenty-six-year-old Ana Martin, with a past that she wants nothing more than to forget. When she meets the handsome Gabriel, she thinks she will be able to move away from her past and embrace her future. However, Gabriel is not what he seems. Ana gets involved with an ancient line of empathetic beings that are known as Siis. When homeless start dying, it brings Ana into their world.

I have read my share of Fae books before and I have to say that Lyneal Jenkins has created a whole different take on the world of the Fae. This book is full of different twists and turns and a great deal of angst to keep a reader interested. The characters are deep and have many layers so that you feel them coming off the page; they could be real. I think there are things we still need to get to know about them, maybe some deeper secrets? Can’t say for sure, of course, but I am very glad that this is Volume 1 because that means we will get more of the story and I can find out if my thoughts are right. The flow of this book is good and makes for an easy read; my only complaint is the editor could probably go over it one more time just to double-check things. With that said, I would recommend this book because it is a solid, entertaining story.

Night of the Fae is the first volume of the Ana Martin Series by Lyneal Jenkins, which follows the story of 26-year-old Ana Martin. The story opens in a very gripping start. Ana, a part-time care assistant, is chased down by a man, a crazed addict, in a car park. Her attempt to escape fails and she is badly beaten with a bat. As she peacefully accepts her moments of death, a strange man (Gabriel) saves her and somehow heals her at the same time.

We then learn that shortly Ana and Gabriel are a couple and their relationship is more than she could hope for. Everything changes when Ana learns his secret. Gabriel is actually an empathetic being from an evolved ancient race known as the Siis, which was torn apart by the consequences of their past actions. Hesitant and frightened at first, Ana accepts Gabriel’s true identity. Ana’s life doesn't become easier as she starts to see other beings that humans could never see, the Fae. Once innocent children, the Fae are now malevolent beings, feeding off the negative emotions of their prey. Can Ana’s mind really cope with these new changes in her life and is her relationship with Gabriel able to survive the obstacles?

I found the transition of the story from chapter to chapter rather quick and I sometimes had to pay extra attention to the time shift in the story (days, weeks or months). Nevertheless I enjoyed the fast paced read. For the first volume of the series Lyneal Jenkins has done a remarkable job of piecing together a romantic fantasy adventure. The elements are there: the passion, the revelation, the twists and turns carefully positioned for the reader to easily grasp. Overall, this is a great read.
