It appears that everywhere you turn there is a new tool, app, or system being created to make our lives easier and better. Is this true or are we setting ourselves up for disaster in the end? Robert Edward Grant and Michael Ashley have teamed up to provide a deep dive into how AI and technology influence our lives in Neuromined: Triumphing over Technological Tyranny. Technology is part of our daily lives and we have become dependent on it from smartphones, getting food delivered, and shopping at home to having various types of surgeries performed. To help illustrate the problems and solutions associated with technology the authors cleverly crafted stories using a Show and Tell concept. 'Show' offers a story that helps to outline ways that technology is being used. 'Tell' gives us food for thought, reflecting the best way to utilize the information to avoid getting trapped or controlled by technology. Knowing what authority we are allowing technology to have over our lives is not to be taken lightly and is crucial for our survival.
I love each story that Robert Edward Grant and Michael Ashley used to bring their points home. One story that caused me to pause was that of Danny and how important it is to pass down history, recipes, books, stories, and other family legacies that can be easily omitted or altered by outsiders, changing the course of history. Danny was told about the injustices that his great-grandfather and great-grandmother had experienced. One day in class on a field trip, history as he knew it was altered through the Metaverse. Racism and social injustice never existed in America in the Metaverse, something that society wanted to remain hidden but Danny knew differently. Will people begin to question if what they see is real or if it is just an illusion of what we wish to see? Relying on technology to provide honest and accurate information without checks and balances can create a skewed version of the truth. It is essential to stay informed as the world evolves. It is necessary to be honest about your relationship with technology. It is why this book is important; to help you get a glimpse into how technology, especially AI, can dominate your future. Also, this book can assist you in seeking ways to determine your own solutions.
