My Darling Dorothy by Jo Ann Virden is a historical event/era novel that takes place during World War II. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of mature young adults and adults who enjoy historical fiction with romance, and who do not mind explicit language and sexual situations. The book is based on real letters that were sent during the Great Depression and World War II. The book follows three main characters - Tommie, Jack, and Dorothy - through their highs and lows. Dorothy is a young woman working to keep her dreams alive in a small down in Nebraska while finding her heart caught between Tommie and Jack. Tommie gets himself through the Bataan Death March with the dream of marrying Dorothy; while Jack meanwhile is forced to face the horrors of war on the front lines in Europe. To whom will Dorothy give her heart? Will she make the right choice, and will love overcome all?
My Darling Dorothy by Jo Ann Virden was a perfect balance between historical accuracy, romantic entanglements, and a unique plot line. I personally found the book to be rather melancholy at times as it did an accurate job of truly showing the horrors of the time period and the pain of war. The author did a spectacular job in developing Tommie, Jack, and Dorothy equally, and forming each character into a unique personality with realistic feelings and actions. Yet, Dorothy quickly became my favorite character as I just found myself drawn to her and able to understand her the most from a female to female standpoint. Overall, I enjoyed the blend of history with romance and I hope that author decides to write a follow up novel as there were some characters that I would love to explore further!
