Moving to Oregon: A Bipolar Journey by James Townsend is an inspiring story about a young graduate whose life turns upside down as he starts his bipolar journey. As a high achiever, he initially has great dreams which he hopes to achieve through his education. However, he is slowed down by the realization of his illness, and all that he has been battling to suppress from his childhood days comes to the surface. With all the strength he can muster, he fights for survival as he struggles to face the baggage he has been carrying along. From bullying to the horrific effects of alcoholism in his family, he comes face to face with his pain and only his tenacity will pull him through.
Moving to Oregon: A Bipolar Journey is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever read. James Townsend writes candidly about the struggles that come with bipolar disorder, the importance of family support during this period, and the phases of the illness as the patient progresses through treatment. The story is written in the first person, which gave me a first-hand glimpse into the life of someone with the disorder. More inspiration for me came from the key character’s courage and ability to face what was ailing him, and how he finally learns how to live with the illness. The book also contains important information regarding alcoholism and the effects it has on a family’s structure. Moving to Oregon: A Bipolar Journey by James Townsend is definitely a must-read for anyone suffering from bipolar disorder or for those with friends or family who have this illness.
