Mikey's Treasure is a children's book written by Missy Moe Hap and illustrated by Tanya Zeinalova. Mikey is an uncut key that someday dreams of unlocking a pirate treasure. On the day he is cut to order, he finds himself in a customer's pocket with two other keys - one that operates a car and one that winds a clock. They tell Mikey the story of George and Lena. Lena planted the beautiful flowers at the house but died last month. As Mikey peeks out to see the flowers, he falls to the ground and is picked up by a magpie. Mikey's fearful shaking tickles the magpie's tongue and he is dropped into a flower bed and covered in pollen. When a bumble bee discovers Mikey inside a flower, Mikey tells Bumble that he lives in a beautiful garden at Green Moss. Bumble safely returns Mikey to George's pocket, where he is taken into the bedroom to unlock a beautiful silver box containing Lena's photographs and letters. Mikey is now protecting the most precious treasure of them all.
Mikey's Treasure is one of those very rare and special children's books that brought tears to my eyes as I read. Missy Moe Hap's adventurous story, coupled with Tanya Zeinalova's fun and colorful illustrations, brought to life the tragic circumstances that bring a new key into the family. Not only did I enjoy the hiccups in Mikey's journey to his new home, but I also loved seeing how uniting in new friendships helps Mikey seamlessly find his purpose in the home of a saddened heart. I know that there are so many children out there who will benefit from reading Mikey's Treasure, and how very painful it is to lose those who you love the most. I wholeheartedly recommend Mikey's Treasure to all children, regardless of where they live, so they realize at a very young age that not all is lost when a loved one dies. Memories of that person are precious and must be preserved always.
