Medieval Mashup is the second installment of Leigh's Wheelie Adventures by Charlene McIver. Illustrated with some fun-filled drawings by Caroline Keys, Medieval Mashup follows Leigh -- a wheelchair-equipped kid with a vivid imagination -- and his adventures with his two best friends, Tara and Cosmo. Eager to put on a show at Phillip Park Primary's Medieval Costume Competition, Leigh, Tara, and Cosmo go to Leigh's dad's warehouse to prepare themselves for the event. While Cosmo chooses to be Robin Hood, Tara is busy preparing her Maid Marian costume. Leigh wants to be the knight in shining armor. However, when he has difficulties preparing his costume, he gets annoyed and snaps at his friends. But soon, he realizes his mistake and makes up with them. After all, the most important thing is to have fun with your friends.
Medieval Mashup is a delightful adventure story for kids that teaches the values of friendship and sheds light on the challenges faced by kids with special needs in their everyday lives. Author Charlene McIver's moving tale is full of heart, charm, and warmth, perfectly complemented by the beautiful illustrations provided by Caroline Keys. Despite being a short story/picture book, each of the protagonists, Leigh, Tara, and Cosmo, display a sense of depth to their characters that make you root for them even in the short amount of time you've spent reading about them. Their friendship feels genuine and authentic, and it provides the narrative thrust that moves the plot forward. Recommend to kids who love fun-filled adventure tales.
