Zombies Anonymous by Myunique C. Green follows Nellie Carter, a journalist assigned to cover Zombies Anonymous, a support group for reformed zombies led by Javier Mendez. As she investigates, she becomes more intrigued by Javier's past and the complications reformed zombies face. As part of her week with him, Nellie attends a public event, where a reformed zombie named Isaac relapses, leading to absolute chaos. Nellie learns about a government reassessment program that mandates the reformed undead must undergo review, with severe consequences for non-compliance. As public acceptance of the reformed dwindles, Nellie embeds herself with a resistance group after discovering the government is manipulating and forcibly reassessing reformed zombies, taking them for horrific experimentation. To get the truth out, Nellie infiltrates a secret government facility to find proof of the government's dark actions, risking her safety and professional integrity while coming to terms with her growing feelings for Javier. “One relapse. One incident. And now, every single reformed undead in the city was about to pay for it”
Zombies Anonymous by Myunique C. Green is a refreshingly original twist on the zombie genre, refocusing the horror elements away from the zombies themselves and onto a social commentary on reintegration in a spectacular way. The story is told through the first-person perspective of Nellie, who is intelligent, determined, and capable, and is exactly the type of female protagonist we relish. Instead of reinventing the wheel, Green takes a familiar, contemporary world and injects clues to put the changes into context: a cafe with an “undead-friendly” symbol, and mothers pulling their children close when they see a wristband. There is an eerie accuracy to what Green portrays by way of discrimination and societal fear. It took me a moment not to feel weird about the romantic subplot, but the chemistry of the two hot leads makes it easy to get past. With pacing at a perfect clip, the intensity of seeing riot gear, and the changing tide turning into a tsunami that barrels toward a tense climax, Zombies Anonymous is a clever, timely story about standing up for what's right—even in a world turned upside down. Very, very highly recommended.
