Martyrs & Traitors: A Tale of 1916 by Marina Julia Neary is a historical novel based around the turbulence of Ireland's civil uprising in 1916 that eventually led to Ireland's freedom from British rule. The story begins in Dublin on Good Friday in 1916 and follows the life of Irish patriot Bulmer Hobson. When Bulmer tries to prevent the Easter Rising, he is kidnapped by his former co-conspirators of the tough Republican brotherhood. When he goes missing, his fiancée assumes the worst, and many believe there is no way Bulmer wasn't killed by the famed Irish rebels. The story follows the next fifteen years of desperate politics, full of rivalry and distrust, conspiracy and broken promises, and ends in a dramatic and bloody showdown that will leave the reader breathless.
I love historical fiction and feel any reader that has a passion for Irish history will really enjoy this story. This story is more than just historical fiction. It is full of danger and violence but also adventure and compassion, and even references of love. There is a dark Irish humor that readers will enjoy. This story asks a lot of questions and makes the reader really think as well, something readers will appreciate. It really dives deep into the topics of religion and the Protestant element of Ireland and how that affects the entire nation. There are so many "what if" questions asked that the reader is really engaged and involved in this story.
