A story about the delights of new friendship is the focus of this lovely children's book, Maia's Mermaid Friend, written by Lois Wickstrom. Maia is on her way to a race where all her friends are waiting for her. She stops next to the pond where she meets an unusual girl. A girl that has a tail! Trezzie the mermaid invites Maia to play with her, an invitation Maia gladly accepts, as she has enough time before the start of her race. The two girls go on an exploration trip under the surface of the lake where Trezzie lives. Maia sees an amazing, wonderful castle where Trezzie spends her time underwater and many other wondrous things that are part of Trezzie's daily life. The two girls quickly bond over mutual interests and become friends. Upon going back to the surface, Maia sees her friend Fig coming toward her, and she remembers the race! Did she miss it? What will Fig say to Maia? Will Fig believe Maia when she says that she has a new friend...and that she is a mermaid?
Lois Wickstrom tells the story of a new friendship between the two young girls through charming and colorful illustrations that complement the story well. It is a light read that talks about the importance of friendship and trust that comes with it, which I like very much. It is an important life lesson which will be of interest to many readers. Educational and entertaining, Maia's Mermaid Friend is good fun for children and parents alike.
