Readers of all kinds will fall in love with Love Letters by Tamika Newhouse, Jasheem Wilson, Phoenix Williams, T.J. Hope, and Shawn Thompson, and which left this reader speechless. Love Letters is the most original anthology ever. Structured like an R&B album from the '90s, Love Letters is more than a collection of short stories; it is an experience. The short intro by Phoenix Williams and Jasheem Wilson is a delightful welcome to the fictional Odyssey Club.
‘You Make Me Wanna’ by Phoenix Williams sucks the reader into Sierra Grady's reality where privilege and status are the only things that matter. Phoenix gives a steamy romance which would make a nun cross herself and blush, ‘when Sierra Grady wears red.’ ‘Dangerously In Love’ by T.J. Hope will make anyone’s mouth go dry. I found myself gasping and shaking my head with each word I read. T.J. Hope expertly traps her readers in a world of confusion, leaving us with only one question. Did she? You will reread this story, searching for answers. This was a fun story to read and brought a little craziness and color to Odyssey. ‘Love U 4 Life’ by Shawn Thompson was unquestionably a fundamental love story. It had a slow and mellow feel. This story was a stark contrast to the others, paling if not swallowed up in comparison to ‘Dangerously In Love’ which left my heart racing. ‘Love U 4 Life’ is structured the same as the other stories with a poem at its core, but that is about all these stories have in common with this one. Shawn Thompson leans very heavily on the poem of a child which was stolen by her best friend. At the end of this story, you will learn many words you would only find in a thesaurus and never actually use.
The Interlude was a very welcome transition. This time, with the help of Khara Campbell, Phoenix Williams pulls us back into the poetical, smooth flow world of Odyssey. Poetry and passion packed in two chapters will tempt you to move ahead to finish Omari’s story. ‘I Miss You’ by Jasheem Wilson is a classic tale of what goes around comes around. Tommy Brush discovers a shocking truth when he plays with the heart of the wrong woman. Jasheem Wilson delivers in this drama packed emotional roller coaster. ‘Before You Walk Out Of My Life’ by Jasheem Wilson and Phoenix Williams was a perfect blending of these two authors. I could not tell where Jasheem Wilson ended or Phoenix Williams began. Never have I seen two authors write so seamlessly as one. By the time I got to the fifth chapter, I could not stop smiling or take my eyes off the page. Move over Michelle Obama; A'sha is my new Shero. I love seeing a powerful black woman take charge, going for and getting what she wants. “What’s love got to do with it?” will be the anthem for independent black women in 2018.
With romantic flair, Phoenix Williams and Jasheem Wilson bring Omari's story to a head and end in the ‘Outro.’ With one of the most beautiful love poems at its core, Phoenix and Jasheem bring Love Letters to an end, giving you all you wanted when you started reading. I usually don't read an epilogue, but I wanted to know if there was anything about Mya from 'Dangerously In Love.' I was not disappointed. Any and every question I had was answered once I finished the epilogue. In ‘Sugar Hill/Heard It All Before,’ Tamika Newhouse teleports you back into the nineties with a mind trip. Tamika sets a mind-tingling scene that has you continually waiting for the next shoe to drop. Tamika Newhouse, you have found a new fan in me. I am impatiently waiting for “Sugar Hill,’ while I get a little Plain with Ms. Jane.
Brava to these authors! I have reread this book twice before writing this review and all I can say is, genius! With story lines that weave in and out of one another and strategically placed poetry, Love Letters takes you there again and again. A real, creative new take on anthologies.
