In the novella Love Blooms in the Garden by Luis Ammerman, Lily, who has just arrived in Chicago for a fresh start, discovers an abandoned, overgrown community garden in an alleyway and decides to revive it. After obtaining permission from the community welfare office, Lily is introduced to Ryan, a landscape architect who worked on the garden before declining funding and volunteers led to its abandonment. She is delighted when Ryan agrees to help her restore it to its former glory. As they work together, facing both human and natural obstacles, the most radiant blossom that emerges in the garden is their love.
For a story this brief, the eloquence of Luis Ammerman’s prose and the imagery it evokes is striking. The detailed and lush descriptions forge an emotional attachment between the reader, the characters, and their garden without being overly verbose. As is typical with novellas, there is not much background given about the characters, keeping the focus on the parallels between their new romance and the new growth in the garden. The challenges they face are met with resilience and determination, leading to a heartwarming happily-ever-after. Love Blooms in the Garden is the perfect short read for those moments when you want to escape into the beauty of literature even when you are short on time; enjoy it over coffee to start your morning or on your lunch break to free your mind of stress. While it features adult characters, it is suitable for readers of all ages.
