In Wizardry: Part 1, Scott Crabtree presents a kingdom on the brink of annihilation, plunged into chaos after a relentless onslaught of demonic forces led by the monstrous Demon Prince, Karza. Amid a backdrop of devastation, Queen Valerias sacrifices her firstborn daughter to summon the goddess Jenyss for aid. Her attempts prove futile, bringing doom to her kingdom instead. The evil wizard and his demon prince son plot to unleash a terrifying horror upon the lands. With the Paladinhood unable to mount a defense, hope rests on Jartan, a novice paladin thrust into a monumental battle despite his lack of training and experience. To stand against this dark force, he must seek the aid of a mysterious sorcerer, who has secrets of his own. As Jartan embarks on a dangerous journey through abysmal swamps and the haunted Undead Forest, he faces unimaginable ordeals leading him into the heart of the Underworld, where survival is uncertain.

Scott Crabtree’s Wizardry: Part 1 is a perfect read for fans of epic fantasy with skillfully accomplished world-building, larger-than-life characters, and phenomenal conflict. The narrative starts with explosive moments of crisis, and the author introduces the suspense right from the start, creating doubt about whether Karza is real or just the figment of the imagination. The plot weaves together the personal sacrifices of its characters and the brutal chaos of war, as conflicts arise from the external threats of demons and the internal strife within the kingdom itself. The hero is an inexperienced paladin, making him all the more lovable. His character arc is deftly handled as he grows in confidence through the trials he faces and unlocks hidden strengths. The author showcases a rich lore with mythical creatures, including vulturats and magmadons. The magic is plentiful, mostly dark and powerful. The pacing is fast, and tension mounts with each chapter, as the looming threats of demons symbolize the darker facets of power and betrayal within this fantasy realm. I loved this immersive world and spectacular fantasy elements, and can’t wait for part 2.
