Liam and Louie by Tina Pearson is a tale about two brothers. It’s always been just the two of them and their parents. Louie, being the older brother, likes to boast that he’s bigger, faster, and better than Liam in so many ways. That makes Liam sad. One day, when school is let out early, the boys race home in the rain. Louie announces he’s taking a shortcut, but Liam goes the usual way. Liam arrives home first and is surprised that Louie didn’t beat him. Worried, Liam goes back and follows Louie’s shortcut. Even though he feels sad that Louie is better at doing so many things, Liam still loves his brother and he knows how to show how big and strong his love is.
Tina Pearson’s picture book, Liam and Louie, is a charming story of two pig brothers who have valuable lessons to learn. Louie, who thinks he’s better than Liam, needs to learn how to be gracious to others and respect their talents. Liam, who feels put down by his brother’s boasting, needs to learn that he has some skills that are stronger than Louie’s, but the most important is his ability to love his brother. The language is simple so young readers can follow along and improve their reading skills. The illustrations are cute and colorful, sometimes even a little humorous. With a well-constructed plot, sufficient descriptions to set the stage, and convincing dialogue, the story will engage young readers as well as educate them on the values of individuality. We’re all good at something. This is another compassionate and entertaining story by an author who knows the importance of teaching values to young people. Well done!
