Letters to the MonSter: What I've Learned and Continue to Learn About Multiple Sclerosis by Lisa McCombs is a book that aims to educate people and raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. The author narrates the events that led to her diagnosis and the life changes she had to make. She discusses the various symptoms of the disease and how it presents itself differently to those affected. The book lists offensive questions people ask her and the things we take for granted like combing our hair and walking. Despite all these setbacks, the author has found activities she is passionate about and a group of people she calls her tribe, who motivate her to keep fighting the MonSter, Multiple Sclerosis.
Letters to the MonSter is an emotional and educational book that made me reflect on how powerful people living with Multiple Sclerosis have to be. The emotional, physical, and mental hurdles they must overcome every day truly earn them their warrior titles. Lisa McCombs is an engaging writer and grabbed my attention from the start. From the creative title to her informal writing tone, I loved everything about this book. Her puns, jokes, and random quirky words and phrases like oops, awesome, and many more made the book fun to read. These little details showcased her positive attitude and brought a light-hearted note to this weighty subject. I applaud her will to continue fighting for people with this disease. Multiple Sclerosis needs more awareness because I did not know much about it, and I am sure many more people are equally unaware. This is evident by the numerous insensitive questions she listed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about Multiple Sclerosis. It was most enlightening.
