In Doubting River by Melissa C Alexander, Charm Freeman left home when he was a teen and he never planned to go back. When his brother-in-law dies, he has to return, finding his nephew broken by grief. But 9-year-old Lucas has one thing he wants to do to honor his father – turn their neighbor’s dog from an injured pup into champion hunter. Charm decides to help him and, as they work with River, the golden retriever, they grow closer, healing not just River, but their own hearts too. Finally, Charm is forced to face his demons but can he really call this place home? When something happens that threatens to break him apart again, can he come back from it?

Doubting River by Melissa C Alexander is an amazing, heartwarming novel about dealing with grief and the power animals have to help us heal. This is about coming home, finding your roots again, and fighting your demons to make your dreams into something worth fighting for. Melissa has created some amazing characters, individual people with real lives and problems, each likable in their own way and wholly relatable. Right from the start you’ll find yourself rooting for Charm, shortly followed by Lucas and River as the bond between man, boy, and dog grows. This is quite an emotionally charged novel with a wonderful plot that you’ll be fully invested in. It highlights the strength and love animals bring us and how much they can help us as we help them. Thoroughly enjoyable. I want to read more from Melissa.
