Lady Grace: Ladies of Disgrace Series by Vicki Hopkins is a period story set around World War I. Grace is 21 years old and she doesn’t see anything wrong with marrying a 40-year-old man. But, although Benedict is kind and has profound respect for Grace, there is something missing from the marriage. Before Grace can understand why she feels so restless, war is declared, and Grace’s life is torn apart and scattered. Her husband is sent to France to fight and Grace has to face the years ahead alone, not knowing if she will ever see Benedict again, so she invites her friend to stay. Together, the two women open their home to those in need during the war, but temptation arrives in the guise of an injured lieutenant. Can Grace fight off temptation? Once peace is declared, her life is put back together but it looks nothing like it did before.
Lady Grace by Vicki Hopkins is the second book of the Ladies of Disgrace series, each being a standalone story. I found this a very easy book to read; it had a story line that was simple yet complex at the same time. Ms. Hopkins has a very direct way of writing, the story is told without fanfare but with plenty of details, and the characters are all developed in such a way that they are easy to identify with. It's easy to fall into this story, to feel as though you are there, experiencing everything that happens, every emotion, and I was quite disappointed when it ended. I really did enjoy this, and I think it would suit anyone who likes period stories and wants something easy to sink into.
