Lady Bird: Shawn’s Sixth Sense by Gracie Bradford is a short book about a ten-year-old boy, Shawn, and how he adapts to a sight disability with the help of his friend and doggie pal, Lady Bird. Lady Bird is a beagle whose instincts and senses enable her to look out for Shawn. Through this, Shawn learns to cope with everyday life at home and school – discovering that he can trust his own instincts and senses too. In his quest to understand his feelings and instincts, he renames friends as taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell. The role of each of these senses is explained - each having a useful and beneficial role. He comes to a place where he understands his needs, and feels confident and happy to be just the way he is.

Lady Bird: Shawn’s Sixth Sense is a unique and interesting story about finding inner resources that enable us to cope with situations that may at first seem disabling and too difficult. Children will love the adorable beagle and her loyalty, patience, and inspiring way of nudging Shawn to find solutions to difficulties. The two share many character traits in the way they allow their instincts to teach and guide them, and they learn from each other. The author conveys their love for and understanding of each other very well.

Many young readers will have experienced the fun and enjoyment of owning and training a dog, and so will identify with Shawn’s love and friendship with Lady Bird. Shawn is an enterprising little boy, and is motivated to help himself, and it is this that Lady Bird is able to nurture. A story that could be shared with children and used to promote further discussion and understanding of ourselves, others and disabilities.

Thanks to the author for realizing that there are various learning styles. It is obvious that the author embraces differences as a unique strength and not a disability.

This was a very cute book for kids. I think it did a great job at explaining what it might be like for some one visually impaired and it described the wonderful relationship between the dog and boy. Great Book

This book is part of a fictional series that describes what life is like for children with special needs. Ladybird is a dog; specifically a beagle. Her name was changed to "Ole Lady Bird" as she aged. In this story Lady Bird is ten years old which makes her sixty in human year. Shawn is Ladybird's owner. Although it never specifically says so, I believe that Shawn is autistic. He uses his five senses to explore the world around him and Ladybird helps to keep him both safe and calm. I can honestly say that I have never read a book written as if it's being narrated by an autistic boy. At times I found this writing style to be off-putting, but it was always unique. I love the fact that this book is different from any other book I have ever read. I also love the fact that Gracie Bradford has chosen special needs children as her main focus. Education and awareness of the needs of these children is an important issue in today's society.

"I would definitely recommend this book to parents to read to read to their children and/or for the child to read. The story has a moral and will teach children valuable life lessons while instilling inspiration and motivation to those who may sometime question themselves. The use of senses is easily identifiable. And what child hasn't desired a dog? This is a positive and entertaining story."
