Erik Reale’s Forging a Second Sun is an action-packed futuristic space opera. The main character, Preo (Preomus Ciniverat), is a salvager of long-lost technologies from derelict superintelligence empires. Her ship, the Charred Crow, is a stealth ship, pitch black with radar-absorbing plates and anti-reflective coatings. With her experience, expertise, and stealth technology, Preo evades the Sentinel Fleets that guard the wreckage of superintelligence technologies. Scyth is a planet rich in metals. It is a freezing planet, barren, with high radiation levels. Scyth and its principal city of Baszone rely on Aethon Mining for their livelihood, and, even more critically, they depend on Aethon for all their energy needs. Preo decides to build a solar-powered energy source for the desperate people of Baszone and Syth.
Immersive from start to finish, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Forging a Second Sun by Erik Reale for its quirky and intriguing character, Preo, and the fantastic futuristic galactic world-building. I particularly liked Preo’s character development in different settings, from her stealth ship to her retrieval of ancient advanced technologies and to helping people live a better life. The technical details of her salvage ship, the Charred Crow, and how she retrieves superintelligence technology were well-written and woven expertly into the story. Those vivid details revealed Preo’s thinking and emotions, courage, sharp mind, and incredible ability to rise to challenges in dangerous situations. The other characters added great depth to the story, as their interactions with Preo revealed more about her commitment to using her abilities and the technologies she salvages to help build better lives. I loved the futuristic and richly imagined world-building of space travel and colonies, from busy space stations to FTL travel through wormholes. Forging a Second Sun is a terrific story of grit and the determination of a remarkable character, Preo. A page-turner filled with gripping action, suspense, and galactic adventures.
