Kurt, Gert, Jazmine and Bagel: A Halloween Nightmare by Irene Dolnick is the story of four puppies who travel on the train together to Phoenix. They arrive at their station and Bagel finds a Halloween Store. All four pups are drawn inside. They get a fright from an old woman in black called Mrs Tricky. They visit the Halloween Candy store too, but Mrs Tricky works there as well. They seek the help of Mr Tin Patch to help them get back to the train station while avoiding Mrs Tricky and Mr Morton, the owner of the Halloween Costume store. He can give them a ride on his wagon, but in the end they return to the candy store for candy.
I liked the drawings of the four dogs; they were simply drawn and colorful. The book is designed to make it easier for children to learn longer words. The words are broken down into sections so they can be pronounced better. There is also a definition. This book covers '-ate' words such as skate or late. Irene Dolnick has created an interesting tale in Kurt, Gert, Jazmine and Bagel: A Halloween Nightmare. This would work as a seasonal book because of the Halloween theme. I think it would appeal to the age group of 7-9 as they advance with their English skills. This book could be helpful as well as entertaining for the young target audience.
