Ella waited eagerly for the egg to hatch and when it did, it turned out to be a caterpillar. Ella named him Patch. He was two inches long with bright stripes of black, white, and yellow. Patch was always hungry and chomped on milkweed all day long. He even sang a caterpillar song and wished to fly high and touch the sky. The frog overheard his dreams and told him that he did not have wings to fly. Ella wanted to make Patch's dreams come true; she wondered if he would be able to fly if she stuck some feathers on him. The bee, like the frog, was skeptical of the caterpillar's dreams of flying because he did not have wings. The caterpillar started crying because the feathers and the cape both did not work. Ella and Patch did not want to give up even after the squirrel felt the caterpillar did not have wings to fly. Nothing was working for Patch and so he spun into his cocoon. Ella did not see Patch for ten long days. What happened when Patch came out of the cocoon? Would he be able to fly?
It's In You: A Book For Big Dreamers by Sharifa Anozie is an uplifting storybook for children to look inside to find what they want so that their dreams will come true. Claudio Espinosa's illustrations are magical and enchanting and give a good pace and movement to the story. The story is all about hope, confidence, persistence, determination, courage, dreaming big, and watching dreams come true. The author uses the life cycle of a butterfly to metaphorically teach young readers how to overcome obstacles and challenges, to look inside, and never give up. It is a good storybook for parents and tutors to use for storytelling and read-aloud sessions to encourage children to look within and find the strength that will enable them to achieve their dreams.
