Isolation & Depression is a short work of self-help non-fiction penned by co-author team Peri Matthew and Laval Martin MSW RSW. Offering “Strategies for Coping with the Effects of Chronic or Situational Depression resulting from Self Isolation” in the time of the coronavirus initial outbreak, this handy guide is a pertinent and useful work for our current times. Situational depression is a condition that is bound to affect those suffering from the sudden loss of loved ones, as well as those who now face uncertain futures and a total disruption to their normal daily lives. Whatever the level of situational pressure, this book offers guidance to all on the nature of the condition and how to help yourself through it.
As authors Peri Matthew and Laval Martin state, this volume about situational and chronic depression was completed just before the coronavirus outbreak, but its sudden relevance to time and place is well handled by the authors in this publication phase. I found the book to be immensely helpful on a personal level to affirm that many of the negative feelings we have right now are a normal reaction to the situation, and the book is organized in a highly accessible form so that all readers should be able to glean clear guidance and comfort from it. Overall, I would highly recommend Isolation & Depression as essential reading at this tough time for everyone to understand the implications of what we are going through, as individuals and as a collective human experience.
