The symbolism in the title of this spellbinding novel caught my attention and I was irresistibly pulled to it. In The Midst of Fire: A Novel by Sierra Kay surpassed my expectations, a story that features great characters, two powerfully contrasting settings, and a conflict that readers will enjoy; it’s a well-crafted suspense story that explores the art of survival. Seraphina Glen has been a fighter and a survivor all her life, accustomed to a milieu where the strong survive and the weak barely fit in. Things suddenly change for her when she transitions from her old and difficult lifestyle, moving into a plush neighborhood with her husband and twin teenage stepchildren. But things change even more when her new husband fails and she finds herself with him and the teenage children living in her old house. When those she loves are threatened, she stands up to fight, and this isn’t just a fight for her: it is payback! But is she ready for the repercussions of her decision?
Sierra Kay is good at creating memorable characters and she thrusts them into action against the backdrop of exciting settings. I loved the fact that the story started with the introduction of the protagonist, and the author immediately draws the reader’s attention to the contrast between the protagonist’s old lifestyle and what she is transitioning to. In The Midst of Fire: A Novel is conflict-driven and readers will love the depth of character development as well as the twists in the plot. Seraphina reminded me of some of the tough people I have met in my life. The story feels real, thanks to Kay’s storytelling skills. It is enjoyable and entrancing; great writing, great plot!
