In the Charm: The Friessens Book 13 is written by Lorhainne Eckhart. While traveling through South Dakota on his Harley, Chris Friessen is stopped by a small-town sheriff and his deputy who, for no apparent reason, soon have him handcuffed and lying face down on the pavement. Only the arrival of J.D., the sheriff’s lively daughter, stops this apparent abuse of power before the violence escalates. And when this same daughter invites Chris for a meal, how can he resist? In any case, he’s a stubborn guy, and he doesn’t take kindly to bullying — especially since J.D. is certainly an appealing, sexy, and charming young woman. But that isn't all: Chris knows that no matter what happens, he will always have the solid backing of his lawyer mother and law student brother. Still, the bullying does continue until finally both he and J.D. are pushed into a situation from which there is no retreat.

It would be hard to find a more delightful heroine than J.D. She’s smart, brave, determined, generous, and wonderfully outspoken, and I did wonder how she survived growing up in such a dysfunctional family, or why she hadn’t left long before. Although people keep insisting her very nasty, controlling father is really a loving teddy bear, that’s impossible to believe. Both he and his deputy are the violent nightmare cops you hope you never have to run into in life. J.D.’s mother, a self-centered former beauty queen who never stops talking, is hardly better, changing her mind and her loyalties without warning. The only likable family member is J.D.’s grandmother, but no one listens to her anyway. In the Charm: The Friessens Book 13 by Lorhainne Eckhart has a cliff-hanger ending. If you want to know whether this is a love story with a happy ending, you have to read the next book in the series.
